Commissioned by Buro Stedelijk, windows of Buro Stedelijk Amsterdam. This text-based window stickers with the names of freedom fighters and the year they revolted against Dutch slavery and colonial rule. I was invited to create this work by Buro Stedelijk, in the context of Keti Koti festival on the first of july. The day on which the Dutch Government declared ‘freedom’ for enslaved peoples in the Dutch Caribbean colonies. The design started from the feeling that Keti Koti is not mine, as this ‘freedom’ might have been ‘given’ on this day, it had to be extensively fought for. In this work I honour the many freedom fighters who fought for the freedom of their country. As a Curaçaoan, I celebrate August 17, the day Tula fought for the freedom of Curaçao, as the day of freedom. In the window stickers you will find the stories of various freedom fighters throughout the years.
